Inclusive tourism

Scroll down for posts that have been tagged with “inclusive tourism”.

The Oganisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) defines inclusive growth as “economic growth that creates opportunity for all segments of the population and distributes the dividends of increased prosperity, both in monetary and non-monetary terms, fairly across society”.

When referred to by The “Good Tourism” Blog, inclusive tourism means the same as OECD’s definition of “inclusive growth” as it pertains to the tourism sector.

Elsewhere the term is often used interchangeably with “accessible tourism”, which is confusing. The term should also not be confused with “all-inclusive tourism”, which relates to the practice of bundling all (or most) of what a tourist might need for their holiday — their transport, accommodation, meals, tickets, passes, et cetera — into a single package.

Gender mainstreaming in tourism & hospitality training. What? Why? How?

Gender mainstreaming in tourism training

What is ‘gender mainstreaming’? Why is it important? And how can it be applied in tourism and hospitality training centres? In the wake of the release of their report on gender mainstreaming, Nguyễn Thị Thu Thảo, Võ Thị Quế Chi, Marlène Vermeij, and Delhi Kalwan of “GT” Partner the Association of Southeast Asian Social Enterprises […]

Visitor dispersion. Can it be managed? Or will visitors simply go where the winds blows, like dandelion seeds? Image by akirEVarga (CC0) via Pixabay. https://pixabay.com/photos/dandelion-seeds-flower-nature-5302188/

An oft-cited antidote to overtourism, and a means to spread the benefits of tourism more widely, is ‘visitor dispersion’. What are the biggest challenges to encouraging and incentivising tourists to explore more of a destination? Who or what do you think could contribute most to effective visitor dispersion? What can an organisation like yours do […]

‘Magnificent’, the adjective, should properly be applied to human actions and virtues rather than tangible things, derived as it is from the Latin ‘magnum facere’, which means to do something great.  Why is ‘Magnificence’ K Michael Haywood’s “North Star”? And how does he think tourism should navigate towards it? Creating ‘Community Shared Value’ demands that DMOs […]

What does it mean to collaboratively design tourism at the community level? And to what end? If it is to strive towards a ‘good’, ‘better’, ‘smarter’ tourism, what does that look like? Retired university professor K Michael Haywood shares his vision.  It’s a “Good Tourism” Insight. [Thanks to Jim Butcher for inviting Prof Haywood to write a “GT” […]

Angelo Sciacca was the first guest author to introduce the concept of the circular economy to this website when he argued for its potential to make small island destinations more resilient and less dependent on travel & tourism. In this, his third “Good Tourism” Insight, Mr Sciacca adds frugal innovation and traditional knowledge to his […]
