SUNx has initiated some 100 Climate Friendly Travel Chapters, led by local Champions, and overseen by global Chapter coordinators based in Zimbabwe and Kenya.

Over the past five years, SUNx has been training students in its postgraduate Climate Friendly Travel Diploma to become Champions and Chapter leaders in their own countries. They receive over 300 hours of learning plus a one-year internship during which they explore interrelated aspects of Paris 1.5 : SDG linked : Nature Positive tourism.

Building a global Climate Friendly Travel network

Chapter leaders are trained to create a local community of Climate Friendly Travel enthusiasts; recruit hotels, lodges, restaurants, tour operators and other tourism players to join the Climate Friendly Travel Registry; and act together to develop local clean and green activities. They will also support the Climate Friendly Travel Club for climate-conscious travellers featuring a unique “earth points” climate loyalty program.

Next steps in Africa

In addition to highlighting the imperative for climate action and adaptations in tourism at POATE 2024 right now, later this year SUNx will showcase new Chapters in Kenya, Zambia, and Zimbabwe during tourism events in Mombasa and Victoria Falls.
