Is there a link between tourism’s resilience and adaptability to climate change?
Tourism destinations and attractions should think about how to increase resilience so that climate adaptation has a higher chance of succeeding, according to Kevin Phun, founder of the Centre for Responsible Tourism Singapore (CRTS), a “Good Tourism” Partner.
“The call to increase resilience in tourism to enable adaptation in more places is surely getting louder,” Mr Phun said.
In an article for the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), which was republished by the Asian Development Bank’s (ADB’s) Southeast Asia Development Solutions (SEADS) platform, Mr Phun wrote:
“We urgently need, among a host of things:
- Tourism policies that promote adaptation, both directly and indirectly.
- Smaller tourism destinations to also understand the potential roles they can play, in supporting adaptation strategies.
- Tourist attractions to think about increasing resilience to facilitate adaptation.
- More tourist activities that can promote the idea of adaptation.”

“We need tourism destinations to:
- Formulate tourism policies that reflect adaptation practices and climate resilience.
- Come up with innovative tourism activities that support adaptation.
- Think of how tourists can play a part in helping destinations increase resilience.”
