The SUNx (“Strong Universal Network”) Program has issued its first annual “Climate Friendly Travel – Ambition Report”.

Prepared on the sidelines of the September UN General Assembly and in collaboration with the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) “to support a Climate Neutral Travel & Tourism Sector by 2050”, the document was made available to download on September 30.

The report’s core premise is that we face an “existential climate crisis” and that “climate action is urgent”.

SUNx asserts that the travel & tourism industry’s response to date has been “limited”, that it’s ambitions must “intensify”, and that climate-friendly travel can be a “solution”.

The report sets a baseline-based system of targets it calls the “2050 Climate Neutral Ambitions”.

Led by former top executive of IATA, WTTC, and UNWTO Geoffrey Lipman, SUNx has developed a close working relationship with the government of Malta and its Minister of Tourism Konrad Mizzi.

Malta is establishing the 2050 targets through the creation of a Climate Neutral Ambitions Registry.

The Mediterranean archipelago is also planning to create an annual think tank event to take place in the first quarter of each year which will review and revamp material from the previous 12 months.
